FANTASTIC OUTDOOR SHOOT
A short blog this time, as I am so excited to share this recent outdoor photo session I had the pleasure of doing here in Cape Town ! Most of my newborn photo sessions are done in the new parent’s home depicting the typical lifestyle of new parents and their baby, so this was something different for me. The mom had received one of GoFoto’s gift certificates as her baby shower gift from a good friend. She and hubby were just settling into a new home and as they both loved the outdoors they asked if we couldn’t do the shoot somewhere in the great outdoors. I also love nature and so I readily agreed as, after all, this would also be a lifestyle photo shoot, with no posing of the baby, it would just not take place in their home environment.
The day of the shoot dawned and it was overcast (a photographer’s dream as the clouds make a wonderful light diffuser!) but it was also very windy and I swear that the wind came straight off ice floes in the Antarctic!! Luckily when we got to Arderne park where we had arranged to meet, we found that it was very sheltered from the wind by our magnificent Table Mountain and although cool it was not too uncomfortable, particularly for their tiny little baby boy!
A Moretan Bay fig tree (there is an informative sign!) which is truly awesome and is something like 100 years old stands proudly in this park and it has all these gnarly roots and wonderful little nooks and crannies to plonk a little baby in comfortably and get the shot! It also added extra protection from the wind, which was important as we didn’t want the little one to freeze!
One image I particularly wanted to capture involved placing a cushion inside this scooped out part of the tree and covering it with a white, fleecy blanket and then have the baby nestled in there, all cozy and warm! Mom put a gorgeous bunny ear hat on baby whilst dad had to get into position by doing a balancing act on one of the huge roots in order to place their son safely into this cushioned hollow. We handed dad his precious cargo and he carefully laid him down in his new natural “crib”. This is one of my favourite shots of that day and I think that the little baby boy was impressed with his position as I even managed to capture a fleeting smile on his face!
This “au natural” photo shoot took less than an hour, with baby telling us in no uncertain terms when he had had ENOUGH, but we managed to have some fun and get some really beautiful images which capture the love these two great parents have for each other and the love and pride they have for their newborn son.
An awesome shoot with awesome parents and a gorgeous baby boy! Many thanks to Pat and Darren for giving me the privilege of doing this for you.
