In the Middle of the Night (#24 Small Talk 2018)

Words murmured to a newborn

When I used to sit in my rocking chair (bought especially for night feeds!) in the middle of the night, holding  my newborn close I used to whisper all sorts of things at various times into the ears of both of my boys when they were “newbies”! I’d like to share a few of my murmurings with you! Here we go:

1: Getting used to you

It is taking me some time getting used to having you in my arms instead of inside me! I love you to bits already and can’t stop staring at you and thinking that one minute you were kicking away inside me and now you are here!!

2: Patience!

Please be patient with me as I try to feed you. I know that both you and I have to go through a learning curve to get this breast feeding right, but between the two of us, we will succeed!

3: Uncertainty

You have days where you are the perfect little soul and then we go through patches where you seem to be so restless and cry an awful lot (at least, that’s what it seems like to me!). Am I doing something wrong, I ask myself? Will I spoil you if I keep you in my arms until you stop crying? Will you feel neglected if I put you down in your crib and leave you to cry? If only you could talk! If only you could talk and tell me what you want, I would willingly do it!! Until then, please believe me when I say that I am doing my very best to make you happy and contented!

4: Oh so tired!

Some days I feel so tired but I am not tired of YOU! I know that soon you will start to sleep through the night and then I will feel my usual bright self again. On some days you are a perfect little angel just feeding and sleeping but on other days, I just don’t know what you want as you are so restless and cry a lot. Is it colic? Is it a growth spurt? I try the magic colic drops, but that doesn’t help. Maybe you just need to be held. Maybe you are feeling a bit lost out here in the big wide world and want your mom’s arms around you so as to feel safe? I wish you could tell me! But I guess I know the answer as you settle down in my arms with little baby sounds and I could swear you have a little smile playing at the corners of your mouth!!!

5: My love for you is endless

I feel such love for you as your tiny fingers curl around mine. I love you to the moon and beyond, my child, my little newborn! I even don’t mind the wet and dirty nappies!!!

Final thoughts

I wonder if a newborn can understand all that we murmur in their tiny ears?  If they can, I’m sure that they will feel how much we love them and that we will do all in our power as their mother to make sure that nothing bad ever happens to them and that we will love them, no matter what! Even if they can’t understand our words, I think that just the tone of our voice as we murmur our words is enough to let our baby know that we are there for them and will always be! And I hope, that they carry that feeling of our love for them through the rest of their lives. My boys are grown up now and I sincerely doubt that they would remember any of my thoughts that I used to share with them in those hours of the night. But I am hopeful that they can still feel all the love that came with those shared thoughts!

I’d really appreciate your thoughts, too! Comment in the box below or email me at lydia@gofotolifestylenewbornphotography.co.za if you prefer.
